Six months after an accident caused when a crane, of all things crushed his Dodge Ram leaving him with a fractured skull and the loss of an arm, among the many serious injuries he sustained, self-made millionaire, Minnesota contractor Edgar Freemantle, launches into a new life. Due to a personality change that included uncontrollable rages, his wife asked for a divorce after he had stabbed her, albeit with a plastic knife, and then tried to strangle her with his one remaining arm.

He subsequently decides to divide his accrued wealth between his wife, his two daughters and himself and leaves his home for Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful secluded island in the Florida Keys, where he rents a house. Most of the land and property on Duma Key are owned by eighty-something Elizabeth Eastlake, whose mysterious and tragic past starts to unfold dangerously. Edgar begins painting but the formidable talent he somehow possesses appears to come not from him but from someplace else, and the paintings seem to have a power that is uncontrollable. The artwork he produces somehow has the ability to destroy life as well as to cure sickness, but soon the thing known as the Lovecraftian peril that haunts Duma Key starts to assert itself, tormenting all those close to his heart.

When the phantoms of Elizabeth Eastlake’s past make a return the damage they inflict is truly terrifying.
